Before you ever try to burn fat there are a few things you must know. For example, if you want to burn one pound of fat, you need to burn 3500 calories! So to burn one pound of fat a week, you'll need to burn an extra 500 calories per day, or eat 500 calories less per day. To burn two pounds of fat per week you'd need to do both or increase each figure. Here's where running comes in...
A big, gigantic YES! Running is one of the most effective and efficient ways to burn fat possible. It uses a huge amount of energy and works out your biggest muscle groups. The average person will burn between 500-800 calories per hour, depending on how hard you run, your current level of fitness and a range of other factors. Contrast that to yoga, which will only burn on average 200-300 calories per hour.
If you're busy, and want to burn fat, you can get more done in less time by running than almost any other activity. It's a fact.
There are also a huge range of benefits that you get from running.
For example:
1 - Weight loss and fat loss. Remember weight loss and fat loss are two different things. Fat loss is the real aim, yet most people confuse the two. You see you can lose weight just by sweating or going to the bathroom, but as soon as you eat or drink again the weight goes back on. The real thing you need to monitor is your body fat percentage.
2 - Improved mood. When you run your body releases hormones called endorphins which make you feel happier and less stressed. Yes, you'll feel tired, but you'll feel better for it. Endorphins are released during almost all types of exercise. In my experience high intensity sports such as running have always produced the biggest 'feel good factor' afterwards.
3 - Slow muscle and bone loss with age. Running helps your body stay toned, strong and healthier for longer. If you've ever met anyone who exercises regularly over the age of 50 you'll instantly see how much younger they look than their counterparts who don't exercise.
Running really does burn fat, but as you've seen it also does a lot of other great things for you and your body. It is hard. But don't be put off.
Here are some tips to get you started:
1 - Create a training program and track your progress carefully. Don't expect to see massive changes straight away. Get yourself a heart rate monitor to closely analyse each run and start an exercise diary to record what you do in each session.
2 - Set yourself realistic, easy goals: e.g. burn 4 pounds of fat in 30 days. Also set yourself fitness goals, for example, aim to compete in a 5 or 10 km fun run after 3 months training. Always give yourself something to work towards.
3 - Start slow and build your fitness levels up gradually. If you try and do too much to fast, you'll get injured and your progress will falter.
4 - Pin this on your wall, your fridge and imprint it in your mind. Yoda's saying, "Do or do not... there is no try." If you really want to reach your fat burning goals - go for it, don't give up and never look back.
